Mattepaint practice by AndreeWallin Mattepaint practice by AndreeWallin
It's me again guys! It's time for another matte. This is an assignment from our recent class with Levente. We were given the (top) plate in which we were supposed to erase all civilization, add a sky etc. I guess it turned out okay, but I still need to practice more on my matte skills.. Anyway, on to the next speed ;)

Um... so what exactly is matte painting? It just looks like extreme realism to me.

I'm not entirely aware of it either, and seeing as your comment was made over a month ago, you may or may not have already found out what it is, but either way.. I'll give you what I know;

In the industry (the business side of things), "a matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that would otherwise be too expensive or impossible to build or visit." And yes, that was from Wikipedia.

And as for what I've learned, a matte painting is when you use a real photo as a plate to your painting. So, in a way it's photomanipulation (hence this guy's deviation is categorized there as well), except that you paint most of it. Surely you could paste in a few photos here and there to match the density level of the photo, but they still paint in a lot of it, as in one would do in a real painting. If it was your copying and pasting images (like in photomanipulation) it wouldn't really be a matte PAINTING, would it?

..Hope that clears something up, for you, or someone else who happens to read this.

Matte painting can also be what you call "copying and pasting" in so far that you use elements from all kinds of different photos to paint a completely new image :)
